How to Choose a Good Cabinet Maker

Cabinet maker working
Cabinet maker's working hands, working smart

Your main criteria for hiring a Cabinet Maker will be: the quality of the cabinetry product and timeliness of the order.

It is a quite difference between a Pros Cabinet maker and assembler-cabinetmaker. With careful analysis, you can quickly determine the degree of professional skills and get more comfortable with your potential contractor. Prior to making a commitment, do some research by asking friends or co-workers and consider the following.

If you can't do it Well, Don't Do It!

My Grandfather once told me, if you can’t make something of quality, than rather not waste your time making anything. He then added, if you make something quickly but poorly, everyone will forget how quickly you made it but will remember the poor workmanship.

Let it take a little longer, so that your quality of work will never be forgotten.

Soon, coming time when only the best will do...

In the world of wooden products, there are also its Masters and its Dealers; those who know his labor to the level of "feelings" and those who decided to earn extra... and faster. During our times we'll decide and choose; soon coming time when only the best will do to please.

In choosing an idol for hand-made crafts in your home, choose knowledge of the craft instead of a smooth talker, as they are as different from each other as photos are to songs. Words such as "free of charge" and "best" are tossed around to sell you on a product and those that use them, are simply in search of that fool who will buy into them. Don't let that fool be you when hiring a cabinet maker.

Practical questions to ask when hiring a cabinet maker

Custom built kitchen, quality cabinet making

Do you do the doors yourself, or order them on the side?
Be honest with yourself here. No self-respecting professional would use the mass produced products available because they could risk damaging their reputation. Well, at least they will be satisfied with the quality of the products by comparing with their own standards.

Is it possible to see some examples of your work done five years ago?
Most advertising today focusses on freshly finished products, detailing the quality of their work, and there’s nothing wrong with this approach. If you are able, seeing an older product will tell you if your prospective cabinet maker's work stands the test of time.

Are you doing your own finishing or contracting that out. What finishes do you use?
It’s quite possible to organize the painting process on the side without offending the cabinet maker. This is a matter of quality control, so you make the decision.

Do you only build cabinets or can you also assist with the windows and the doors trim?
If you get a positive response, you are dealing with a professional and you can complement your own project and keep it under one roof.

Can I visit your production facilities to become familiar with the process?
Don’t look for cleanliness and tidiness, or spacious rooms. A master cabinetmaker will smile and apologize for the disorder and lack of space but, you will find evidence of their skills and expertise.

Of course when hiring a cabinet maker, you should pay attention to the form of payments they accept, and how you will be kept informed of the ongoing progress of your project. It’s normal to request photos of the progress every two weeks.

A Few Words about Accuracy and Smart Design

When you find yourself face to face with a cabinet set built to order, check it out for things like left over pencil marks and the quality of finish. In general, the product should be pleasing to the eye and make a statement as to the credibility of the cabinet manufacturer.

A good Cabinet Maker is responsible for the design. Sometimes you see a product that is made with quality craftsmanship, but fails in the functional design, which will make you want to hang the Cabinet Designer by the ear on the closest oak tree. Well, it all made sense according to the drawings, but now you have to look at it for years to come. Where are those antidepressants?

- Having the ability to show how they do it!
It shouldn't just be a bunch of words.

No doubt you have watched some type of professional sports at some point, right? Professional athlete's movements are deliberate and free from the hustle and bustle, and where every move determines an exact desired result; nothing is wasted and a drop of sweat does not spoil the picture. A professional does not jump or skip; rather a true master is like an orchestra conductor’s hands, orchestrating their instruments.

Papa Geppetto, the Italian woodcarver made a doll from a wooden log; Pinocchio. According to the fairy tale, the hands of a master achieved real value and acquired a soul. If cabinet boxes in your home not only have filled a space, but have also created coziness, it was done by a master. If coming closer truly lets you feel the life and soul of this product, then this was the handiwork of a wizard.

All of the above criteria are in no sense related only to the one-man show master. Some businesses manage great with quality control during the rotation of many orders in parallel, and even succeed to become inventive. Choosing and hiring a cabinet maker should not be assessed a shoe size or vehicle. For you as the customer, it’s important to execute an order’s procedure and required quality.
